The Patented D-Port design of the Scavenger X-Pipe Kit creates a low-pressure area where the exhaust pulse from one pipe helps pull the next exhaust pulse from the other pipe out of the cylinder, to produce a significant increase in torque and horsepower. The design retains the classic deep Flowmaster exhaust tone. (Other X-Pipe designs give a higher pitch tone.

The Universal Scavenger X-Pipe Kits mount ahead of the mufflers in place of a traditional H-pipe and can provide significant torque improvement. The patented Scavenger D-port technology functions exceptionally well on modified GM, Ford, Mopar and "Muscle Car" applications while maintaining the classic Flowmaster sound.

The exhaust gases from an engine carry considerable energy. This energy can be put to use through careful design of the components that make up the exhaust system. Flowmaster has put a lot of R&D-efforts into the crucial components where gases from different cylinders join. If these parts of the exhaust system are improperly designed, the exhaust forces from the different cylinders can create uncontrolled turbulence that robs the engine of torque and power. Flowmaster's patented D-port design ensures that the force in the exhaust pulses is properly used to improve scavenging. With the D-port design, the exhaust pulses mainly stay in the same pipe, with the D-port acting as an air pump, creating a low-pressure zone in the adjoining pipe. This low-pressure zone pulls the oncoming exhaust pulse in the second pipe out from the engine, and when this pulse passes the D-port, it does the same for the exhaust in the first pipe.

The Scavenger Series X-pipe is also designed to let certain frequencies of pressure and sound waves cross over between the pipes, to cancel each other out. This reduces interior sound in the vehicle, and the energy lost when the sound waves collide helps create the low-pressure area in the X-pipe that is key to its positive effect on exhaust scavenging.
